Governing Board Webinars

1. Welcome to the Board!
Our introductory webinar will provide concise advice on running meetings and recording minutes.  The webinar will give new members the confidence to actively participate in meetings, and will give seasoned Board members a refresher on best practices.  We will also offer tips on how to record effective meeting minutes to set your program up for success on monitoring reviews.

2. Introduction to Head Start and the new Head Start Program Performance Standards
Head Start agencies are required to provide Board training on the new program performance standards.  This webinar provides Board members with a solid understanding of Head Start’s core programmatic requirements and the way those requirements are implemented in the performance standards.

3. The roles and responsibilities of the Board
The Board has legal and fiscal responsibility over the Head Start program.  But what does that mean?  We will provide concrete examples to explain the fiduciary duties of Board members.  We will also identify common areas where Boards overstep their roles.

4. The roles and responsibilities of the executive team
In this webinar, we’ll go into more detail regarding key Head Start requirements and the roles and responsibilities of the executive team in implementing these requirements.  We will discuss Head Start hot spots, such as eligibility, program services, dual language learners and children with disabilities.

5. Federal grants 101
Board members should be well-versed in major requirements of the Uniform Guidance.  We’ll explain foundational concepts of federal grant programs and identify high-risk areas that deserve special attention.

6. Data-driven decision making: a primer
The Head Start Program Performance Standards emphasize that Boards must have access to relevant data to make informed decisions.  We’ll use the annual self-assessment as a case study to identify the data that should be available to Board members and discuss how to effectively document the use of data.

7. How to excel on monitoring reviews
Monitoring reviews will include interviews with Board members.  Practice makes perfect!  In this webinar we’ll provide advice on how to effectively prepare for these interviews and we’ll review questions that are likely to be asked.  Finally, we’ll review areas where programs commonly stumble during interviews.

8. Human resources concepts the Board needs to know
We’ll review important human resources issues such as evaluating the executive director and managing legal risk.  We’ll also review the Head Start Act to explain Board responsibilities over human resources issues.

9. Privacy in the age of big data
Data is only as good as its accuracy.  The Head Start Program Performance Standards recognize this important concept and require the Board to approve a program’s data management procedures.  We’ll review best practices to ensure the integrity and security of program data.

10. Lessons learned: Looking to the past for ideas about how to improve in the future
Congratulations!  We’ll reflect on successes of the past year and talk about ways to identify opportunities for improvement.  Successful Boards are thoughtful and reflective Boards – the end of a school year is the perfect chance to think and reflect!
