Long Term Care Facility Infection Control Requirements and the COVID-19 Crisis

June 30, 2020

Access the on-demand webinar here.

In its revision of the long term care (LTC) requirements of participation in 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) strengthened infection control rules for LTC facilities. Effective November 2017, each facility is required to create a system for preventing infections and diseases and to develop written policies and procedures for the program, among other requirements. In response to widespread illness and fatalities from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in LTC facilities, CMS in March 2020 initiated special expedited survey procedures for infection control. State Survey Agencies have already, as of June 2020, cited more than 7,000 nursing homes for infection prevention and control program deficiencies.

On March 23, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) updated its Work Plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to include new audits relating to LTC facilities. Infection control is the primary focus of one HHS OIG audit.

This webinar will review the most current LTC facility requirements for infection control, the status of related state surveys, and the outlook for additional audits and government reports.
