(Recorded Webinar) HIPAA: Business Associates

Health centers regularly contract with vendors and other third parties that perform functions or activities on their behalf, or that provide a variety of important services.  When those functions or services involve the use or disclosure of protected health information (PHI), the contractor may qualify as the health center’s business associate under HIPAA.

The HIPAA Privacy Rule requires covered entities (like health centers) to obtain “satisfactory assurances” that their business associates will appropriately safeguard the PHI they create or receive.  Those “satisfactory assurances” are typically memorialized in a contract called a “business associate agreement” (BAA) between the covered entity and business associate.

This webinar will explain how health centers can properly identify their business associates, describe health center obligations with respect to business associates, and highlight important points to consider when negotiating BAAs.
