Ensuring Access Under the ADA
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability by places of public accommodation and recipients of federal funding, including health care providers, in the provision of goods and services to the public.
Not only does the ADA contain nondiscrimination requirements, it also places an affirmative obligation on employers and businesses, including health centers, to provide reasonable accommodations upon request.
As safety-net providers, health centers are well-positioned to provide health care services to persons who typically face access barriers for various reasons, including cost and location. Unlike with other barriers to access that health centers are tasked with addressing for their service population, failure to provide equal access to its services for persons with disabilities could expose a health center to claims of discrimination.
This webinar will provide an overview of the ADA, explain the obligations health centers owe to patients (and potential patients), and present best practices for complying with the ADA and reducing exposure to potential discrimination claims.
